The two armies divided into working parties to gather bodies and to collect firewood.  They met on the battlefield and with difficulty identified the dead.

The Trojans washed the bodies, wept, and lifted them into carts.  Priam forbade them to cry out.  They burned the bodies and returned to Troy.

The Greeks did the same and went back to their ships.

The next morning chosen Greek men built one mound for all the bones.  Based upon the mound they built a wall, a rampart with towers and gates.  Outside the wall they dug a moat and planted it with pointed stakes.
