Athena found Diomedes by his car drenched in sweat and covered in blood trying to cool the wound from Pandaros arrow.  She unfavorably compared him with his valiant father, Tydeus who had acted in disobedience to her orders and prospered in war.

Diomedes reminded her that she had told him not to engage any god but Aphrodite.  Athena commanded him to engage Ares.  She threw Sthenelos from the chariot, mounted the car with Diomedes, took the reins, and they raced towards Ares.
