Hearing the news from a cryer, Priam left Troy to join the parlay on the battlefield.   After cutting the fleece from a ram and an ewe, the wool was passed among the officers it was agreed that:
  • If Paris kills Menelaos he will keep Helen and the gold.  The Greeks will return home
  • If Menelaos kills Paris then the Trojans must return Helen and the gold and pay a tribute to the Greeks and their descendants.

The sheep were killed and wine was spilled for the gods.  A sacred lottery was drawn by which it was decided that Paris would cast his weapon first.
