After Odysseus had spoken to the reassembled army there was only one dissenting voice.  Ugly and mangy Thersites took the speaker's staff and denounced Agamemnon's greed and reminded the assembly of his dealings with Achilles.

Enraged, Odysseus took the speaker's staff from Theristes and beat him with it.  The council and army watched and laughed while the ungainly, comic, and cowardly man was beaten.
