gyre

Gyre is mostly a series of acrylic sketches on 1/8 x 11 x 14 inch (6mm x 30cm x 36cm) mahogany plywood panels. Gyre is a continuation of the Helix series. The Gyre series was begun in early April 2007 and completed in late August 2007.
There is a short passage of six watercolour sketches 9 x 12 inches (23 x 31 cm) on cold pressed Arches 140 pound watercolour blocks within the series.
Except for the introduction of a camera lucida and watercolour, the acrylic kit I used to make gyre is the same one I used to paint the Helix sketches.

When I was sketching "the reefs" between Lady Evelyn Lake and Sucker Gut Lake a group of kids in canoes on an expedition paddled by: "He is painting."  One said to another like I wasn't exactly there.
"Are you painting?"  One boldly asked.
"No," I said "I received a grant from the Canada Arts Council to do a performance piece of an artist sketching from nature."

I took an inexpensive digital snap camera on my sketching trips. I did studio sketches upon my return from the photo snaps of subjects which were moving too quickly or where too inconvenient to sketch from life.
I used both the still and the video functions to make a photo documentary of my sketching trip to Lady Evelyn Lake and Clearwater Provincial Park where I stayed at Ken Byberg's Island 10 Fishing Resort.. click on the camera.
